Pilots fire Reese after 8th straight loss
June 5, 1964
Cleveland -- The Seattle Pilots have fired manager Pee Wee Reese after skidding to their eighth straight loss here.
Reese replaced Ralph Houk at the Seattle helm after 37 games last season, but lasted through the first 52 games of the 1964 campaign before being relieved of his duties.
After losing to the Cleveland Indians by 5 to 4 last night, the Pilots had fallen into third place in the Lemon, five games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers.
Reese, a 13-year PWBL veteran who spent his entire career in Detroit, began his managerial efforts in 1960 with the Tigers. He led the team to 97 wins and a second-place Kiner finish in 1961.
Reese was sacked after the Tigers lost 20 of its first 26 games the following season.
After replacing Houk, Reese led Seattle to 60 wins in 125 games. This year the team climbed into first on May 3rd. The Pilots were the Lemon Division leader when their losing streak began with a 3-to-2 loss to the Indians at Sick's Stadium.
Frankie Crosetti, the team's third-base coach who directed the Pilots briefly in 1962 when Houk walked off the job in protest, will serve as interim skipper until a permanent replacement for Reese is hired.
