Roberts wins 300th, Mays hits 63rd

New York -- Robin Roberts and Willie Mays turned a meaningless game for the Williams Division-winning New York Mets into something for the ages.

Roberts became only the second pitcher in PWBL history to win 300 games and Mays moved into third place on the single-season homerun boards when he slammed three roundtrippers, raising his year-to-date total to 63.

Roberts went seven innings in the New York Mets' 8-to-5 win over the San Diego Padres at Shea Stadium here. The 38-year-old righthander from Springfield, Ill., scattered four hits and walked two while yielding three unearned runs in earning his 16th victory of the season against just five losses.

Mays backed Roberts with an awesome display of power, hitting a two-run homerun in the first, a solo shot in the sixth, and another two-run roundtripper in the eighth. The 44-year veteran improved his PWBL-leading RBI total to 150.

Roberts won for the first time since August 26th and lowered his Players League-leading ERA to 1.99. Mays's three-homerun day, the sixth in the league this year, left him six short of 500 career roundtrippers.

The Mets clinched the Williams on September 2nd. Birdie Tebbetts's team has not been out of first place since the third day of the season.
