Mays, Koufax win Player of Month honors

June 1, 1965

Willie Mays, who alone accounted for one third of the New York Mets' runs during May, was selected the PWBL's Player of the Month, while Sandy Koufax won Pitcher of the Month honors after holding opposition batters to a .178 average and compiling an ERA of 1.10.

Koufax, the 29-year-old Detroit Tiger southpaw, easily outdistanced Claude Osteen of the San Francisco Giants in the best pitcher voting. Koufax won four games and lost only one during May, while completing three of his five starts and tossing a shutout.

Mays's 12 homeruns during the month left him just one shy of 450 for his 15-year Postwar Baseball League career. The two-time MVP was named first on all but one ballot as no other player received more than six votes.

Mays created 40.3 runs in May, while the Mets scored 127. The 34-year-old centerfielder hit .369 with 23 runs scored and 26 rbi's.
