Koufax no-hits Padres for 9, wins shutout in 13th
June 4, 1965
San Diego -- Sandy Koufax held the San Diego Padres hitless for nine innings and shut them out for 13 complete innings as the Detroit Tigers moved into a tie for first place in the Lemon Division, winning by 1 to 0 at Jack Murphy Stadium here.
Koufax walked one and struck out 12 while not allowing a hit for the first nine innings--an official no-hitter, according to PWBL rules--and though the 29-year-old southpaw surrendered a one-out single to Harmon Killebrew in the bottom of the 10th and gave up two more one-base hits, he did not permit a runner past first base in recording his second shutout of the season.
For seven-and-two-thirds innings the 32,000 fans in attendance watched a double no-hitter as San Diego starter Joe Sparma also held the Tigers to just three walks.
Jerry Lynch finally snapped Sparma's bid for PWBL immortality with a pull single in the eighth. The 23-year-old righthander did not allow another hit, holding Detroit scoreless before departing for a pinchhitter in the ninth.
Lynch led off the 13th with a double, and after Padre reliever Jim Owens had retired Tom Haller on a fly to left and Koufax on a grounder to short, Chico Cardenas tripled into the left-center gap for the game's only run.
Koufax (7-2) finished with 15 strikeouts while walking only Glenn Beckert in the second. Owens (1-2) took the loss.
