Drabowsky, Mays named Players of Month

May 1, 1963

Moe Drabowsky was the unanimous choice for Pitcher of the Month in April, while Willie Mays took home the honors for Player of the Month in a vote of baseball writers who cover the PWBL.

Drabowsky, a 27-year-old hardthrowing righthander who was born in Ozanna, Poland, won four games against no losses for the Detroit Tigers. The eight-year veteran tossed 29 consecutive scoreless innings before yielding an unearned run to the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday.

Mays hit .329 with five homers and 18 rbi's for the Mulcahy Cup-defending New York Mets. The 32-year-old centerfielder, who hit .429 in clutch situations, outpolled Roberto Clemente of the San Diego Padres and Hank Aaron of the Cleveland Indians to win the prize.

Drabowsky cleared the table in the voting, easily outdistancing 5-and-0 Larry Jackson of the Panthers.

Apr 21, 1963: Musial gets 3,000th hit

Philadelphia — Stan Musial wasted no time at Shibe Park here tonight, singling in the bottom of the second off Bob Purkey for his 3,000th hit in the Phillies' 9 to 4 win over the Houston Buffs.

Musial drove home Frank Robinson, who had singled to lead off the inning and had taken second on a basehit by Willie Stargell. The 42-year-old veteran from Donora, Pa., pulled Purkey's pitch into right for his fifth hit of the season and 3,000th of his 18-year Postwar Baseball League career.

"It's feels fine," Musial said modestly when asked after the game how it felt to become the PWBL's first hitter to reach the 3,000 hit plateau.

Musial was lifted for a pinchhitter in the seventh with southpaw Denny Lemaster on the mound. Vic Power, his replacement, homered to left with a man aboard to seal the five-run victory and even Philadelphia's record at six wins against six losses.

Apr 19, 1963: Musial at 2,999

Philadelphia — Stan Musial hit a fourth-inning run-scoring single for the Phillies' only hit off Camilo Pascual, giving the 42-year-old veteran 2,999 hits for his 18-year Postwar Baseball League career.

Musial, who holds PWBL records for games, runs, hits, total bases, doubles, triples, and rbi's, will have a chance to become the league's first player to reach 3,000 tomorrow night at Shibe Park against Bob Purkey, last year's Cy Young Award winner in the Federal League.

Musial, relegated to part-time duty by manager Walter Alston, is hitting .364 with four hits in 11 trips to the plate. He has driven in three runs for the 5-and-5 Phils.

Aaron, Cepeda capture MVP trophies

Orlando Cepeda was a unanimous choice for the 1962 Most Valuable Player award in the PWBL Federal League, while Hank Aaron easily outdistanced his rivals to take home the MVP trophy in the Players League.

Cepeda, who looked for much of the season as if he would capture the Triple Crown, polled 55 votes to just 23 for Rocky Colavito, his teammate on the Houston Buffs, who finished second.

Aaron hit more than 50 homeruns for the third time in his career to lead the Players League while finishing second in hitting with a .326 average. The Cleveland Indians' rightfielder received 53 votes to 36 for runnerup Frank Robinson.

Cepeda led the Federal League in hitting with a .358 average on 241 hits, the second-highest total in PWBL history. The 24-year-native of Ponce, P.R., known to his teammates as "Baby Bull," became the first Latin American player to win the MVP prize. Colavito won the award in 1961.

Aaron grabbed the trophy for the first time despite hitting 62 homeruns in 1960. The 28-year-old native of Mobile, Ala., finished second to Eddie Mathews that season.

Koufax, Purkey win Cy Young awards

Sandy Koufax became the first PWBL pitcher to win two straight and Bob Purkey became the sixth Houston pitcher to win as the winners of the 1962 Cy Young awards were announced.

Koufax, whose Players League-leading 1.75 ERA was the third lowest in history, won 16 games for the Detroit Tigers and captured 25 votes. Cleveland's Turk Farrell, who made the successful transition from reliever to 20-game-winning starter, was second with 20 votes.

Purkey won 22 and lost just six for the pennant-winning Houston Buffs, lapping Ken Johnson of the Los Angeles Stars by 31 votes to 20 to capture the Federal League award.

Koufax won the 1961 award for the Players League's best pitcher after a 22-10 season with a 2.84 ERA. Although his win total fell and though he pitched 82 fewer innings, the 26-year-old Brooklyn-born lefthander completed nine games and tossed five shutouts both years. His strikeout ratio rose to 10.7 last season from 8.8 in 1961.

Purkey joins five other Buff hurlers who have taken home the Cy Young trophy in the Postwar Baseball League's 17 years. Hal Newhouser won in 1947, Billy Pierce in 1955 and 1958, Camilo Pascual in 1959, and Jim O'Toole last year. The 32-year-old Purkey, a native of Pittsburgh, won 20 games for the second consecutive season after going 21-4 in 1961.
