Horton, Blasingame win Rookie honors
Oct. 8, 1965
Willie Horton led all PWBL rookies with 34 homeruns while Wade Blasingame placed first with 17 rookie wins, and today the two were honored with Rookie of the Year awards.
Horton, the 22-year-old left fielder for the San Diego Padres, outpolled 16-game winner Pete Richert of the New York Mets by 42 votes to 33 to take home the trophy for best rookie in the Players League.
Meanwhile, Blasingame prevailed in a tight three-way Federal League race, edging Curt Blefary of the Cincinnati Reds by 34 votes to 28. The San Francisco Giants' Joe Morgan was a close third with 21 votes.
The 21-year-old Houston Buffs southpaw won 17 games against 14 losses while compiling an ERA of 3.29 in 34 starts. Blasingame became the fifth Rookie of the Year in Houston history.
Horton, the first Rookie of the Year since his franchise relocated to San Diego from Milwaukee, clubbed 34 homers and drove in 95 runs while hitting .265. His slugging percentage of .501 was seventh best in the Players League.
Blefary was the second-best slugger among rookies, banging out 29 homeruns. The 21-year-old Brooklyn native hit just .233, however.
Morgan, the Giants' 21-year-old second baseman, reached base at a .348 clip, but he too suffered because of his .235 batting average.
Richert's record of 16 wins and 6 losses duplicated that of 16-years-older teammate Robin Roberts. The 22-year-old southpaw from Floral Park, N.Y., went 7 and 1 in July and August as the Mets sprinted to the Williams Division title.
No other Players League rookie received more than five votes.

McDowell, Koufax win Cy Young awards
Oct. 6, 1965
A pair of 300-strikeout pitchers were selected to win their leagues' Cy Young Award in close votes.
Sam McDowell of the Dallas Colt .45s was named best pitcher in the Federal League, outpolling the San Francisco Giants' Jim Bunning by 62 to 53 votes. McDowell was named first on 10 ballots while Bunning was placed first on two.
Meanwhile, Detroit's Sandy Koufax became the first three-time Cy Young winner in PWBL history when he collected 54 votes to outdistance 300-game winner Robin Roberts of the New York Mets, who polled 40. Koufax was listed first on nine ballots; Roberts, on three.
Koufax set a new single-season record with 357 strikeouts, breaking the 19-year-old mark of 339 established in the PWBL's inaugural campaign of 1946. McDowell compiled the third-highest total in history, fanning 330.
McDowell won 20 games and lost 12 on a team that finished 16 games below .500 in the Kiner Division. Koufax went 17 and 13 for the Lemon Division-winning Tigers, suffering from erratic run support.
The 29-year-old Brooklyn-born southpaw lost seven decisions in which he permitted three runs or fewer. In one stretch from August 17 to September 24, Koufax lost eight games against only two wins while lowering his ERA from 2.41 to 2.36.
Koufax won back-to-back Cy Young trophies in 1961-'62. The 22-year-old McDowell, pitching in only his second full season, tossed eight shutouts and completed 23 starts, the third-highest total in PWBL history.
Hoyt Wilhelm, the Pittsburgh Panther reliever who notched his 600th lifetime save during the season and saved 50 games for the seventh time in his career, was named first on one ballot and finished third in the Federal League voting.
Washington's Juan Marichal came in third in the Players League, while Koufax's Detroit teammate Eddie Fisher received the only other first-place ballot in the polling.

Roberts wins 300th, Mays hits 63rd
New York -- Robin Roberts and Willie Mays turned a meaningless game for the Williams Division-winning New York Mets into something for the ages.
Roberts became only the second pitcher in PWBL history to win 300 games and Mays moved into third place on the single-season homerun boards when he slammed three roundtrippers, raising his year-to-date total to 63.
Roberts went seven innings in the New York Mets' 8-to-5 win over the San Diego Padres at Shea Stadium here. The 38-year-old righthander from Springfield, Ill., scattered four hits and walked two while yielding three unearned runs in earning his 16th victory of the season against just five losses.
Mays backed Roberts with an awesome display of power, hitting a two-run homerun in the first, a solo shot in the sixth, and another two-run roundtripper in the eighth. The 44-year veteran improved his PWBL-leading RBI total to 150.
Roberts won for the first time since August 26th and lowered his Players League-leading ERA to 1.99. Mays's three-homerun day, the sixth in the league this year, left him six short of 500 career roundtrippers.
The Mets clinched the Williams on September 2nd. Birdie Tebbetts's team has not been out of first place since the third day of the season.

Colavito racks up 1,000th rbi
June 23, 1965
Philadelphia -- Rocky Colavito drove in four runs with two singles and a sacrifice fly at Connie Mack Stadium here, becoming the 17th man in PWBL history to rack up 1,000 lifetime rbi's.
Colavito, a 31-year-old New Yorker who has played his entire ten-year career with Houston, ripped a Luis Tiant fastball up the middle in the third to score Tommy McCraw and Vada Pinson, putting the Buffs up by 3 to 0 and giving southpaw Wade Blasingame (7-6) all the runs he needed.
The defending PWBL champions won by 9 to 0 as Blasingame shut out the Phillies on three hits.
Colavito hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to bring the score to 4 to 0. He added a run-scoring single in the Buffs' five-run eighth inning.
The 6'3", 190-pound left fielder broke in with Houston in 1955 and played his first full season the next year, hitting .321 with 21 homeruns in just 104 games. His best year was 1961 when he won the Players League Most Valuable Player award after hammering 53 homers and driving in 158 runs.
Colavito hit his 300th career homerun in 1964 when Houston won the Mulcahy Cup.

Koufax no-hits Padres for 9, wins shutout in 13th
June 4, 1965
San Diego -- Sandy Koufax held the San Diego Padres hitless for nine innings and shut them out for 13 complete innings as the Detroit Tigers moved into a tie for first place in the Lemon Division, winning by 1 to 0 at Jack Murphy Stadium here.
Koufax walked one and struck out 12 while not allowing a hit for the first nine innings--an official no-hitter, according to PWBL rules--and though the 29-year-old southpaw surrendered a one-out single to Harmon Killebrew in the bottom of the 10th and gave up two more one-base hits, he did not permit a runner past first base in recording his second shutout of the season.
For seven-and-two-thirds innings the 32,000 fans in attendance watched a double no-hitter as San Diego starter Joe Sparma also held the Tigers to just three walks.
Jerry Lynch finally snapped Sparma's bid for PWBL immortality with a pull single in the eighth. The 23-year-old righthander did not allow another hit, holding Detroit scoreless before departing for a pinchhitter in the ninth.
Lynch led off the 13th with a double, and after Padre reliever Jim Owens had retired Tom Haller on a fly to left and Koufax on a grounder to short, Chico Cardenas tripled into the left-center gap for the game's only run.
Koufax (7-2) finished with 15 strikeouts while walking only Glenn Beckert in the second. Owens (1-2) took the loss.

Mays, Koufax win Player of Month honors
June 1, 1965
Willie Mays, who alone accounted for one third of the New York Mets' runs during May, was selected the PWBL's Player of the Month, while Sandy Koufax won Pitcher of the Month honors after holding opposition batters to a .178 average and compiling an ERA of 1.10.
Koufax, the 29-year-old Detroit Tiger southpaw, easily outdistanced Claude Osteen of the San Francisco Giants in the best pitcher voting. Koufax won four games and lost only one during May, while completing three of his five starts and tossing a shutout.
Mays's 12 homeruns during the month left him just one shy of 450 for his 15-year Postwar Baseball League career. The two-time MVP was named first on all but one ballot as no other player received more than six votes.
Mays created 40.3 runs in May, while the Mets scored 127. The 34-year-old centerfielder hit .369 with 23 runs scored and 26 rbi's.
